April 19th marks an important date in Lake County Republican politics, the election of party leaders for the coming term. The Lake County Committeeman election at this year's convention features at least two excellent candidates for the top job, Lake Villa Township Supervisor Dan Venturi and Cuba Township Highway Commissioner Tom Gooch. Electing new leaders is one of the important dutes of precinct committeemen and comes hot on the heels of their own election in the March Primary.
Competing visions of the Lake County GOP future collide in the days and weeks preceding the bienniel convention as candidates vie for support among township and precinct committmen. The candidates and their supporters are circulating letters and white-papers articulating their approach to party organization, leadership, fundraising and the General Election campaign strategies. Decisions made at this convention will affect the Lake County GOP direction for years to come, at least through the 2008 Presidential Election.
It appears that Tom Gooch has a vision of greater roles for township committeemen, including enhanced fundraising activities and utilizing modern campaign technology. Dan Venturi's supporters mention his skill at coalition-building and organizing special events. Both campaigns mention the need for greater party unity, and an end to infighting.
Whoever throws their hat into this ring must be prepared to hit the ground running and spend long hours to make things happen.
