It's the (National) Security Stupid!

Lost in the noisy debate over ongoing Senate Judiciary Committee discussions about illegal immigration is the overwhelming fact that US National borders remain unsecured. On March 28th, the Government Accounting Office (GAO) issued a report with the obscure title
GAO-06-545R Border Security Tests This cryptic name belies the critical nature of the revelations in the report, which are better described in the subject line of the GAO report transmittal letter:
Subject: Border Security: Investigators Successfully Transported Radioactive Sources Across Our Nation’s Borders at Selected Locations
That's right folks. GAO Investigators smuggled radioactive materials of the type suitable for building dirty bombs into the USA RIGHT ACROSS OUR BORDERS.
This demonstrates a travesty that is fundamental to any discussion of immigration, illegal or otherwise. The FAILURE TO SECURE OUR BORDERS.
WE MUST SECURE OUR BORDERS !
To the extent that our borders remain unsecured, allowing the single largest threat to national security, the transport of nuclear weapons into America by terrorists, the entire immigration debate is moot. The GAO report indicates that a planned DHS 2009 deadline to protect America from terrorists transporting WMDs “unrealistic,” citing budget shortfalls and program problems. But this report has not stopped the Senate Judiciary Committee from going forward with a flawed plan that would divert billions in needed funding from security programs during the coming years in order to administer a massive illegal alien amnesty program and a massive increase in guest worker immigrants.
An unholy coalition of Democrats greedy for new potential supporters and Republicans eager to supply unlimited low-wage guest workers to the economy are combining to reduce the priority of border security. Manpower and resources will undoubtedly be diverted from border security enforcement activities to managing the huge guest worker program. The proposed amnesty program will actually exacerbate the level of illegal immigration, rather than reducing it.
Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) had this to say about the Senate amnesty plan:
“The Senate Judiciary Committee, in voting for a massive and massively expensive amnesty and guest worker program has demonstrated just how far out of step they are with the concerns of ordinary Americans,” Stein said. “While hard-working middle class Americans are concerned about their jobs, the quality of their children’s education, and whether we are protecting ourselves from the threat posed by terrorists, the Senate is concerned with the agendas of their campaign contributors and advocates for illegal aliens."
For many Americans, this program will mean lower wages, higher taxes, higher healthcare costs, and increased threats to national security. That is hardly in line with America's national priorities.
